Spain were downright favorites against the four-time World Champions who lost their opening game 2-1 to Japan.
The first half was reminiscent of a chess game between two grandmasters with both teams doing brilliantly to keep the score line at 0-0 to avoid a checkmate.
The coaches went to the bench in search of the ex-factor, Spain would eventually get the lead through Alvaro Marato who did not waste time after coming on to replace Ferran Torres in the 54th minute to separate the two sides with a headed goal in the 62nd from a Jordi Alba assist.
The opening goal only added more flare to an already heavily contested affair, with elimination and humiliation facing Germany in the eyes, Hansi flick made changes which eventually paid off as substitute Niclas Fullkrug equalized for the Die Mannschaft in the 83rd minute.
The substitute came steaming into the box and slotted home the equalizer courtesy of Bayern Munich youngster Jamal Musiala’s assist.
The draw meant that Germany live to fight another day after only collecting one point from a possible six while Spain may have felt like they missed out on a chance to secure qualification for the round of 16 with a game to spare as they go into the last game against Japan on top of the group with 4 points.
Germany will now have to ensure they beat Costa Rica in their final group stage match or get eliminated for the second consecutive time in the group stage.
They have also only won one World Cup game since 2014 final which they won after beating Argentina 1-0.
