“They Need To Improve” – Mweetwa On Zambian Strikers In The League

Rainford Kalaba was the last Zambian player to score 24 goals in 2007, followed by Enoch Sakala [Senior], who also scored 23.

The poor goal scoring rate of the MTN Super League players has disappointed former Zambian striker Nchimunya Mweetwa.

With ten goals apiece, Godfrey Binga of the Napsa Stars and Titus Chansa of the Power Dynamos are leading the Golden Boot race after Week 25 fixtures.

Mweetwa, a former player for Zesco United and RoPS in Finland, recommends taking deliberate steps to improve local strikers’ goal-scoring effectiveness in an interview.

Mweetwa lamented the decline of top scorers among Zambian strikers in the top division in recent years compared to his playing days.

“I played in an era where there were goal scorers. I remember I played for the national team, whereby you are waiting for Collins Mbesuma to come and play,” he stated. “You are there, but you know that Mbesuma, when he plays, is going to score more goals than you and make the team win.

“We Need Strikers’ Coaches” – Mweetwa.

“So, we no longer have that. The last time we had a Zambian scoring 24-plus goals was in 2007, and it was Rainford Kalaba and the second Enoch Sakala [Senior], who also scored 23 or so.”

He has since urged local coaches and clubs to put in effort and continuously enhance the players’ skills.

“So, for me as a striker, it breaks my heart to see goals not as many as we are supposed to see. Football is all about goals. So, if you’re not having a lot of goals, I think we need to do something as coaches. We need to improve our strikers, but as well as the strikers, they need to work extra hard,” Mweetwa said.

He added, “You don’t just score. Scoring is an art, and you need to perfect your art. You can only perfect your art in training and your personal training. But it’s rough.”

He recommended, “We need to have structures in place. Here, we just have the head coach, assistant coach, maybe a second coach, a physical trainer, and the goalkeeper coach. So, we haven’t specialized in these other departments. So, if we are talking about a lack of strikers, then we need to now have strikers’ coaches. We need to train the coaches.”
