According to Caston Chilekwa, Chirundu United head coach, the shortened version of the MTN Super League will not affect their chances of surviving relegation in their maiden participation in the Zambian Premier League.
The Border Boys earned promotion to the top-tier league, last season and will be aiming to remain in the league.
Speaking to Bola News in an interview, Chilekwa states that preparations have progressed very well.
“Currently preparations are going well and the players are responding well to our training programme,” he said. “We regrouped, and since we started, everyone is in good shape, and the mentality is just right. There is eagerness from the boys to play in the Super League as we worked hard to get to this stage.”
Asked if the shortened version, which is transitioning to the May-November window next year, will affect his team’s chances of staying in the league, Chilekwa said the abridged version of the league will not affect anything.
“I don’t think so; we will still compete very much with the rest of the teams, with the same number of home matches and away matches. So we will not be distracted by thinking about the transitional league having few matches, but instead, we are working on maximising those matches,” he said.
Chilekwa said he is ready for the challenge to lead his team in the Super League.
“It is every coach’s dream to stand in the dugout in the Super League. I’m ready for the new chapter with the club,” he concluded.
