Despite playing with one player down, debutants Malawi delivered again on Saturday night, hammering Egypt 3-1 in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) edition to top group C with 6 points from two matches.

With Zambia losing to Nigeria 1-0 in the other fixture, it means Malawi has collected all points in this group, with Zambia and Nigeria collecting 3 points apiece from the same number of games.

Only two nations will qualify in this group to the quarter finals, no third-ranked nations.

In order to progress, Malawi still need a win or a draw against Zambia in their final match for them to finish top.

A defeat to Zambia will give them pressure if Nigeria defeats Egypt.

Coach Lovemore Fazili says for now they need to celebrate their victory against Egypt before they start preparing for Zambia.

Fazili said so far he is impressed with his girls:

“Actually we are a country that has never played WAFCON before; the players are fighting at least to have positive results. I am happy because they have the heart to prove to the world and to Africa that despite the fact that they have never played at WAFCON before, we are capable of delivering.”

Player of the match Rose Kadzere, who scored and created one, said players need to keep fighting ahead of a crucial tie against Zambia on Tuesday.

“It is good” – Temwa Chawinga.

Temwa Chawinga, who also scored and created one assist said the team has registered two wins in two matches despite playing for the first time at WAFCON.

Temwa heads the ball beating the Egyptian goalkeeper.

She also said playing with her elder sister, the Scorchers captain, Tabitha Chawinga, in front feels good. “She supports me, provides assistance, and encourages me when I am down. It is good”

“Our team is full of young players, and they have the heart to deliver. We are now looking forward to our last game; we need a win that will also mean we have made it to the next round. We will go back and prepare well,” she said.
