On Sunday, Zanaco climbed to the summit of the MTN Super League. After six matches, they are unbeaten with 14 points and playing with a confidence that was missing for much of last season.
The change has come from a few key additions to the squad, a less complicated system, a reset in mentality, and a stronger defence. It is still early days in the league, but for a team that flirted with relegation last season, the progress is clear to see.
What has changed?
A Coach Who Keeps It Simple
When Mumamba Numba arrived in the middle of last season, he inherited a side low on confidence. This year, with a full pre-season to set the tone, his approach has been obvious.

Numba is known for not overloading his players. He keeps instructions simple and gives them the freedom to play. The result is a squad that looks relaxed, confident, and united.
Defence First
Before the 3-2 win over Kabwe Warriors, Zanaco had conceded just once all season. Clean sheets away at Muza, Leopards and Nkana showed how tough they have become to break down. Even when the Warriors scored twice, Zanaco still had the resilience to see the game out. A solid back line has been the foundation of their strong start.
New Faces Making a Difference
The signings have played a big part in the turnaround. Goalkeeper Francis Mwansa has brought stability between the posts, while Malawian midfielder Chimwemwe Idana has added energy and composure in midfield.
Up front, Eliya Mandanji has already hit the ground running with three goals, while Gavin Munkandamwene and Ian Sindaye are also part of the fresh injection of quality. Together, the new arrivals have blended well with the existing squad, giving Zanaco fresh life without upsetting its balance.

Goals Shared Around
Zanaco are not relying on one player to carry them. Mandanji leads the way with three goals, Araina Lambert has two, and both Idana and Dalitso Phiri have chipped in with one each. That spread of goals means opponents cannot just shut down one threat. Everyone is contributing.
A Team Rebuilt on Belief
Last season, Zanaco looked like a side trying to survive. This season, they look like a side rediscovering themselves. The mix of a calm coach, a stronger defence, smart signings, and shared responsibility in attack has rebuilt belief around the club.
The early signs suggest this is more than just a good start. It feels like the beginning of a proper rebuild.
