US based star Temwa Chawinga has told Malawi football authorities to change their perspective on women’s football.
On her return to Malawi, Temwa received a hero’s welcome as a way to commemorate her achievements with Kansas City, which included winning the National Women’s Soccer League’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Speaking to journalists, Temwa said it is disappointing how the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and government treat women’s football in the country.
“The only professional tournament we have is Cosafa, year in and year out. And you want us to come here to play for Cosafa? Not again. I will never come here for Cosafa.
“When I was contacted [to come and play for Cosafa], I refused to come, look here, why is it that Zambia does not consider players like Barbra Banda for Cosafa? No, I will never play Cosafa again,” she said.
She pointed at Malawi Women’s president Adellaide Migogo who was in attendance. “Take what I have said to the FAM president [Fleetwood Haiya], tell them what I have just said.”
“We need a competitive women’s league” – Temwa.
Temwa reprimanded Macmillan Mwale, the ministry of sports spokesperson, to lobby for government assistance for women’s football.
“As with men’s football, she stated, “Take this message to the president [Lazarus Chakwera] to consider us.”
Temwa scored 20 goals in one season with Kansans, became the first player to score in eight straight games, became the first player to score against all 13 active teams in one season, and contributed 26 goals in one season.
