Mighty Wanderers interim head coach MacDonald Mtetemera has attributed his side’s defeat to a “suicidal mistake” by his player.
Wanderers lost 1-0 to Simba SC last night at Bingu National Stadium in Malawi in the CAF Champions League first preliminary round.
The goal came in the 65th minute after a mistake by captain Emmanuel Nyirenda, who allowed an aerial ball to bounce past him before Simba’s Anicet Oura finished into the net.
Coach Mtetemera was furious with his captain’s error.
He said: “It was a mistake done by our defender, allowing the ball to bounce with him watching, I don’t know what he was thinking. Mistakes do happen but suicidal mistake like that…”
Asked about the overall match, Mtetemera said it was a bad result for the Malawian club, especially as they were playing at home.
“But we have to work out on our mistakes, and see what we will do next. We had chances, we should have converted. We will fight in Tanzania, it’s possible, we can win 2-0 away, nobody knows, I believe we will upset them,” he said.
Simba coach Steve Barker praised the opposition, saying they forced his side to stay at the back but ultimately did well to score the away goal.
