Zambia coach Chris Kaunda has been linked to the FCB Nyasa Big Bullets top job following the sacking of coach Peter Mponda three weeks ago.

Another coach reportedly in contention is former Jwaneng Galaxy and Highlanders boss Hendrik Pieter de Jongh.

Sources from Bullets said the club has received about five applications from coaches, both local and international, interested in taking charge.

After the expiry of Zimbabwe coach Kalisto Pasuwa’s tenure, Bullets brought in Mponda, who lasted just a year before being dismissed due to the team’s poor performance.

For the first time, Bullets lost all three Blantyre Derbies to their rivals, Mighty Wanderers, and also recorded more league defeats than in the previous season.

The source added that this time, Bullets management has decided to appoint an expatriate coach rather than a local one.

“A decision will be made soon, but even if the club has not released a vacancy, coaches are applying for the job. The plan for now is to employ a coach from abroad and not a local coach. As you know, Bullets did well under Pasuwa, and that’s why they are no longer interested in employing a local coach. For now, interim coach Gilbert Chirwa will lead the team till the end of Castel Challenge Cup,” said the source.

Both Hendrik Pieter de Jongh and Chris Kaunda are familiar with Bullets. De Jongh had been in Malawi while coaching Silver Strikers, while Kaunda observed the club when they played Red Arrows of Zambia in the CAF Champions League in 2023.
