Portugal came from behind to defeat Croatia 2-1 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, where they will face Spain.
Substitute Gonçalo Ramos scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner, heading home Rafael Leão’s cross in the 94th minute to seal Portugal’s place in the next round after an enthralling contest.
The match was packed with drama, with three goals ruled out following VAR reviews—two for Croatia and one for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ivan Perišić had given Croatia the lead early in the second half before Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot after a VAR review awarded Portugal a penalty. Croatia later saw two more goals chalked off for offside, including a late effort by Joško Gvardiol.
Ronaldo also made history by becoming the first player aged 41 or older to feature in a World Cup knockout match. His penalty was his first-ever goal in the knockout stages of the tournament.
