Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to defeat England 2-1 and secure a place in a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final.

The defending champions struck twice in the final five minutes through Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez to overturn the deficit and book their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where they will face Spain.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with both sides producing disciplined defensive displays.

Clear-cut opportunities were scarce, and remarkably, neither team managed a single shot on target during a cagey opening 45 minutes as the sides went into the break locked at 0-0.

England made a bright start to the second half and finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Morgan Rogers whipped a cross into the box for Antony Gordon, who tapped home from close range to hand Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions a deserved lead.

England looked on course to secure victory, but Argentina mounted a dramatic late fightback.

With exactly five minutes remaining in normal time, Lionel Messi delivered a cross that found Enzo Fernández, who unleashed a strike from 25 yards to level the score at 1-1.

The equaliser sparked Argentina into life, and moments later Messi was once again the architect, floating another cross into the penalty area for Lautaro Martínez to head home the dramatic winner.

Argentina will now return to the FIFA World Cup final for the second successive tournament, where they will take on Spain as they bid to successfully defend their world title.
