Malawi Women’s Football Team coach Lovemore Fazili has attributed the Scorchers’ success to the friendly matches organised by the Malawi Football Association (FAM), including their participation in the FIFA Series tournament.
The Scorchers, who are making their debut at this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), made history by reaching the final after beating Algeria 3-1 last night.
Malawi will face Cameroon in the final after the Lionesses edged hosts Morocco 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.
Head coach Fazili said Malawi’s achievement can also be attributed to the friendly matches the team played in preparation for the WAFCON finals.
Malawi played six matches, losing five and drawing one against Tanzania. In April this year, Malawi participated in the FIFA Series, where they lost 5-0 to Australia and 3-2 to India.
Fazili said playing in the FIFA Series gave the team a serious test and helped the players adapt to pressure.
Reacting to yesterday’s victory, Fazili said it felt like he was dreaming.
“I have been in this coaching career for years, have made achievements but this one it’s something else, I don’t believe it.
“It’s as if I am dreaming that we have reached the final. Huge thanks to players who gave it all, and my backroom staff plus FAM who did everything to support us. It’s just the final, we have some work to do,” he said.
