Zambia concluded their Group H campaign at the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Brazil, finishing second on seven points, level with the South Americans who topped the group on goal difference.
The Young Chipolopolo took the lead in the 25th minute through captain Jonathan Kalimina, who brilliantly scored directly from a corner kick.
Zambia dominated the first half in terms of chances, registering 11 shots compared to Brazil’s five. The South Americans came close to equalizing in the 30th minute, but goalkeeper Christo Chitambala was alert to block Wendeson Santos Dell’s effort.
Mapalo Simute also had a golden opportunity to extend Zambia’s lead in the 40th minute, receiving the ball inside the box, but his shot lacked power and was comfortably saved by Brazilian goalkeeper Jao Pedro.
The second half saw Brazil become more aggressive, creating multiple scoring opportunities, but Chitambala remained vigilant, producing two crucial saves to keep Zambia ahead.
Brazil eventually found the equalizer in the 81st minute when Dell headed home from close range off Angelo Candido’s cross, leveling the match at 1-1.
Both Zambia and Brazil had already secured their places in the round of 32.
