In – form striker Gamphani Lungu is racing against time to make the final Chipolopolo squad after picking up an injury while in impressive form for South African side Orlando Pirates.
The injury, believed to be a pulled hamstring, occurred during Pirates’ 4-0 victory over Kruger United in the South African Premier Soccer League.
It comes at an unfortunate time for Lungu, who has enjoyed an impressive start to life at the Soweto giants and established himself as an important attacking option for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
The 27-year-old has scored four goals and provided one assist in seven appearances, with his latest strike coming against Kruger United.
However, the club is yet to issue a statement on the extent of the injury, although there are fears that it could be serious.
Lungu has also taken to social media to express his frustration at the setback.
“I’m devastated to be sidelined, but my focus now shifts completely to healing. I’m going to pour everything into my recovery so I can get back out there, fully fit, and give you the performances you truly deserve. Thank you for always believing in us,” Lungu wrote on Facebook.
Given his impressive form, Lungu had been on interim coach George Lwandamina’s wishlist for a call-up ahead of Zambia’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
His fitness will now be closely monitored as Lwandamina puts the finishing touches to his squad.
