Chipolopolo legend Kennedy Mweene has made a giant leap in his coaching career following his elevation to goalkeeper trainer at Mamelodi Sundowns in the latest technical bench shake up at the club.
Despite the decent start to the season in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Sundowns have made the changes, sidelining head coach Manqoba Mngqithi and goalkeeper trainer Wendell Robinson.
The club’s poor showing in the Champions League where they have two points from a possible six could be what has motivated the changes to the technical bench.
In a statement, the club revealed that Mweene will however be part of new coach Miguel De Azevedo Cardoso’s technical bench.
“Coaches Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene, will remain as part of the Club’s new Technical Team,” the statement read in part.
Mweene, who was an assistant to Robinson will now take the role of main trainer for keepers. Some of the keepers under him are Bafana Bafana number 1 Ronwen Williams and Uganda’s Denis Onyango among others.
Mweene, is a former Chipolopolo keeper, who was instrumental to Zambia’s lifting of the Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) title in 2012.
He had a long playing spell in South Africa turning up for Free State Stars but it was at Sundowns where he achieved cult hero status in South African football.
Last year, he announced his retirement from playing, transitioning into coach with the club retaining him as the assistant goalkeeper trainer.
He is Africa’s second-highest-scoring goalkeeper with 13 goals for club and country, seven behind record holder, Nigerian legend Vincent Enyeama.
