David Hamansenya opened up about the emotional toll of his “frustrating” injury and admitted he may not play an official match in the Czech Republic in an exclusive interview with BolaNews.
The left-back was signed by Czech National League side Artis Brno in January on a six-month loan from Spanish La Liga 2 outfit CD Leganés after impressing with Zambia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Hamansenya, who predominantly featured for the U19s in the División de Honor, joined Leganés at the beginning of the season from Shamuel Academy in a deal running until 2029.
Artis Brno were eager to secure the services of the Zambian teenager amid competition from Bundesliga clubs. He was brought in as a replacement for Senegalese defender Hamidou Kante, who was transferred to Czech champions Slavia Praha in mid-January for €2 million.
However, shortly after being unveiled by Artis Brno, Hamansenya suffered a groin injury during training in late January. The 18-year-old featured in two club friendly matches in Poland before travelling with the squad to Portugal, where the pain intensified.
After a review by Artis Brno’s medical team, it was confirmed that the Copper Bullets defender would be out of action for at least two months.
It’s frustrating – Hamasenya
Speaking exclusively to BolaNews about the ordeal, Hamansenya narrated, “I was really frustrated. Just after joining the team, I ended up [getting] injured.”
“But I think, mentally, I was really strong. And I would say, it is important to take it step by step. I was really focused on my rehab and staying connected with the team. I reminded myself that it’s just a setback and not the end. So I just have to focus on my well being.”
“It was really challenging mentally, but I thank God that I dealt with it nicely. I am now feeling better,” he added.
When quizzed about his return to action, Hamansenya clarified, “I started individual training recently, last week. [I have been having] gym sessions. So, I am now doing my recovery sessions.”
“But I don’t know If I’ll play any league game because I don’t know how I will respond to my recovery sessions. Hopefully, very soon, I will get back to the pitch.”
Artis Brno, who are currently occupying a promotion spot in the Czech National League table, have six league matches left, the last of which is a trip to MFK Chrudim on May 23.
