Zambian U-20 defender David Hamasenya, 18, who made a strong impression at the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, and his compatriot Gift Siame, 22, a midfielder, featured for Spain’s CD Leganés first team in a pre-season friendly against Mexico’s Pumas at the Olímpico Universitario on Sunday.
The match, which marked Leganés’ first pre-season outing, ended in a 2-0 defeat. Coach Paco López’s side, having only completed three training sessions prior to the fixture, struggled to find rhythm against the hosts.
Hamasenya and Siame joined Leganés in August last year and have been playing for the club’s youth teams since their arrival. Their inclusion in Sunday’s starting lineup could signal a promotion to the senior squad ahead of the upcoming La Liga 2 campaign.
Hamasenya has been a topic of discussion among fans following his standout displays at the U-20 AFCON, performances that earned him a senior national team call-up in May for friendlies against Tunisia and Sudan. However, those matches were later cancelled amid claims of a player boycott over unpaid allowances—claims the players collectively denied.
Leganés will continue their pre-season preparations with another friendly against Louisville this Sunday.
