Fashion Sakala, the Zambian striker, says he turned down more lucrative offers to remain at Saudi Arabian club Al Fayha because of the sense of belonging, trust, and stability he has found at the club.
Sakala recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at Al Fayha until June 2029, having initially joined the Saudi Pro League side from Scottish giants Rangers in August 2023.
The Chipolopolo forward has established himself as one of the club’s key players, scoring 43 goals in three seasons, and says the decision to stay was one of the easiest of his career.
“To be honest, I had a lot of offers from different clubs, but there was no club where I saw myself fitting in. Al Fayha has become my home and part of my family. I really feel comfortable and safe here,” Sakala said.
Sakala explains that despite several clubs offering significantly higher salaries, the support he receives at Al Fayha outweighed the financial considerations.
“People would say I should have chosen more money, and even the president knew there were clubs offering me more. But the love I have felt at Al Fayha is something I have never experienced, especially from the board and management. That is something money can’t buy,” he said.
“My wife told me to stay” – Sakala.
Sakala explained that he had already made up his mind to remain at the club before the end of last season.
“I told my manager that whatever final offer Al Fayha gave me, I would accept it. It was a very easy decision because I am happy here.”
Despite his personal success, the 29-year-old says his biggest ambition is to help Al Fayha win silverware before he eventually leaves or retires.
“The club has shown belief in me, and with that comes responsibility. I hope I can help the team win at least one trophy. That is my biggest dream because of the love they have shown me,” he said.
Sakala said that his family fully supported his decision to stay.
“My wife has seen how happy I have been since joining Al Fayha. She told me that if I am happy, then we should stay. Sometimes when you are looking for more happiness elsewhere, you end up losing the happiness you already have.”
Sakala also praised the rapid development of Saudi Arabian football.
“A lot of people think it’s only about money, but you have to work hard because many players have failed here. The league is improving every season, and with the ambition I have seen, it will become one of the best leagues in the world,” Sakala said.
