I found the appointment of Oswald Mutapa as Power Dynamos coach interesting. Not only is he replacing title-winning Mwenya Chipepo, but he was also stepping into the shoes – and potential shadow – of his own brother, Perry Mutapa.
In November 2019, Power appointed Perry as their head coach replacing Gaston Mutobo. His appoint marked by high expectations but ultimately ended in disappointment, leading to his firing in 2021.
Perry’s reign at Power was turbulent, he never achieved the success that many had envisaged, rather it was marked clashes with some players and underwhelming results. So, can Oswald avoid his brother’s pitfalls and lead the “Kitwe giants” to success?
The answer, as with most things in football, is far from straightforward. While both Mutapa brothers share a passion for the beautiful game and an affinity for displaying an attractive brand of football, their personalities paint contrasting pictures.
Clash of Styles
Perry is known for his animated, outspoken demeanor. He doesn’t mince words, a trait that can sometimes come across as harsh or undiplomatic. Oswald, on the other hand, exudes a calmer, more measured approach, perhaps influenced by his training as a police officer.
This difference extends to player management. Perry has been accused of frosty relationships with certain players, at Power, his fall out with them poster boy Alex N’gonga is well documented. As for Oswald, he prefers a more hands-on, “arm-around-the-shoulder” style to managing players.
Experience Gap:
Oswald boasts significantly more experience than his younger sibling. The former Nkwazi trainer has managed more clubs than Perry and served as assistant coach for the senior national team, even leading various junior national teams, this experience will come in handy. Perry’s experience pales in comparison, with a handful of stints as under-17 and under-20 national team coach alongside his Lusaka Dynamos, Forest Rangers and Power stints.
Shared Passion
Despite their contrasting styles, both brothers share a love for attacking, passing football. This aligns perfectly with Power Dynamos’ traditional playing style and passionate fanbase.
Uncertain Future
So, can Oswald succeed where Perry stumbled? Predicting the future in football is notoriously tricky. Oswald’s experience, calmness, and willingness to trust youth are strong assets. However, the shadow of his brother’s failure and the pressure of a demanding fanbase loom large.
