Rabat to Host 2027 FIFA Congress as Morocco’s Football Rise Gains Global Recognition

The 2027 congress is expected to carry significant political and strategic weight, as member associations vote on the leadership that will guide the sport into its next cycle.

On 18th March 2027, Morocco will host the 77th FIFA Congress, a key gathering that will elect the next president of FIFA and bring together representatives from all 211 member associations.

The decision places the Moroccan capital at the center of global football governance at a pivotal moment, as the current mandate of Gianni Infantino approaches its conclusion ahead of the 2027 vote.

FIFA’s selection of Morocco reflects growing confidence in the country’s organizational capacity and its expanding role within international football. Rabat already hosts FIFA’s first regional office in Africa, reinforcing its status as a strategic hub for the sport on the continent.

The hosting rights come amid a sustained period of success for Morocco both on and off the pitch. The national team reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African and Arab side to achieve the feat. This was followed by a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament and victory at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Beyond results, Morocco has invested heavily in football development structures, including a nationwide network of academies, expanded grassroots programs, and upgraded stadium infrastructure aligned with international standards. The country has also increased support for women’s football, contributing to broader growth within the game.

FIFA’s decision is seen as recognition of this long-term approach, which combines competitive performance with institutional development. It also signals a broader shift toward greater African involvement in global football governance.

Hosting the event offers Morocco an opportunity to further strengthen its diplomatic influence within football circles.

The congress will also serve as a precursor to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal. Preparations for that tournament have already accelerated infrastructure development and logistical planning across the country.
