Uncertainty surrounds the return to fitness of Scorchers and Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga, after she missed, a season opening match at home on Saturday against Utan Royals which her side won 2-1 in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Chawinga suffered an adductor injury with almost 6 games to finish the season last year but still managed to win the season’s golden boot award with 15 goals, becoming the first player to achieve that feat in two consecutive seasons.
Her coach Chris Armas on Friday told ESPN that the two-time reigning National Women’s Soccer League MVP’s return to action remains unclear.
Armas said it is hard to tell because it’s a complicated injury.
“I think the best way to do it, which is the most honest, is short-term. Is it the next month where we see Temwa in action? Who knows. But that’s me trying to answer that it’s getting closer.
“With Temwa, we have to be really intelligent with how we bring her back, in the right doses into training. What I can tell you and everyone is that she’s getting closer. She’s not available yet, but she’s getting her out on the training pitch these days. It’s such a demanding season for these athletes, especially the demands that she puts into games. So, as she’s getting close, we still are managing it right way,” he said.
With the current development, it is clear that Temwa would not be available for Scorchers.
Last week Scorchers captain, Temwa’s elder sister Tabitha told Bola News that she is happy with the Wafcon postponement because Temwa would have missed the games.
“Moving the WAFCON to July will now help us because Temwa will be fully back for action,” she said.
