A few years back, many thought Mupopo’s sporting life was as good as done when she was handed a four–year ban after failing a doping test.
In 2018, she was given a four-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). This was after she tested positive for a prohibited substance following a failed drug test at the 2017 World Championships.
Mupopo’s sample provided at the event was found to contain exogenous testosterone. The Zambian denied any wrongdoing, claiming that she always has elevated testosterone levels due to hyperandrogenism.
After serving the ban, she has dusted herself and is looking to help Zambia make history by qualifying for the Olympic Games for the second time in a row.
Mupopo announces her return at Levy
Earlier this month, Copper Queen’s coach Bruce Mwape handed Mupopo a rare call–up ahead of the two-legged clash with the Black Queens of Ghana before making the cut for the final team.
She went on to start in both legs and scored for the Copper Queens in their 3-3 draw with the Black Queens.
Her goal came when Zambia was 2-1 down at home, and it helped the Copper Queens get back into contention, pushing them to the last round of the Olympic qualifiers, where they will face Morocco for a spot in Paris after forcing a draw with Barbra Banda’s last-gasp free kick winner.
Reacting after scoring her first international goal in ten years, the 31-year-old said, “It’s a good feeling. It’s all about helping the team and putting in a lot of effort. We will continue to do out best and win games.”
This is a player who has been out of the national team set up for over a decade. She quit football to concentrate on athletics, where the unfortunate happened.
