The Malawi league kicked off on April 5 this year, but to date, all players who have been voted Player of the Match are yet to receive their prize money.
This situation comes after 49 games have already been played, leaving players frustrated as officials have not publicly addressed the issue.
Each Player of the Match is entitled to MWK100,000 ($58), a reward that comes directly from the league sponsors, Telecom Network Malawi (TNM).
Players we spoke to expressed disappointment with the current system.
“Last year we were getting our prize money instantly but now we wonder what has happened. I tried to ask my club but they are not aware why there is this delay,” said one of the players who was voted Man of the Match in the first week of the league.
Another player said they have been checking in with each other to see if anyone has received the payment, but it appears no one has.
A source from the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) revealed that the delay is due to TNM not releasing funds on time.
“We have been talking to them and the matter is resolved. TNM will be depositing the cheque into our accounts this week,” said the source.
Sulom Vice President Ronald Chiwaula also addressed the issue, telling the press in Malawi that the matter would be resolved today.
“Today the matter will be resolved,” he said, though he did not clarify whether the players would receive their money by the close of business.
