The Bayern Munich forward was initially expected to miss the tournament after sustaining an injury during a Germany Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen.
The Senegalese football federation however insisted they had to carry out more tests before ruling their star out of the Qatar World Cup, a thing which saw coach Aliou Cisse include him in the final squad.
Cisse told the media that Mane was likely to miss the first few games and hoped he will recover to play for his country.
On Thursday night, the Senegalese FA said their attempts to get Mane back to fitness proved futile and formally ruled him out of the tournament which is set to kick off this weekend.
Senegal team Doctor Manuel Afonso said the extent of the injury is not what they expected and the player will have to miss the tournament to recover.
“Unfortunately, today’s MRI scan shows us that the evolution of the injury is not as positive as we had hoped and we,” he said during a media briefing. “Unfortunately, we have to declare Sadio’s withdrawal from the World Cup.”
