Libya-based Chipolopolo midfielder Kelvin Kampamba has resumed training for his club Al Madina after days of violence in Tripoli, with the club president Abdul Majeed Al-Malikata assuring him and his teammates safety.

Last week, the Libyan capital experienced heightened tensions. According to the Associated Press, the fighting erupted after the killing of al-Kikli, commander of the Stability Support Authority (SSA), by a rival militia.

Due to the clashes, training sessions were suspended, and players had been instructed to remain in their apartments until further notice; however, according to the latest update from the club, the team has returned to training.

“The whales are back!” the club posted on their Facebook page on Monday. “After a pause and vacation, the City team returned to practice from its fortress in the heart of the vibrant.”

On Tuesday, the club provided another update where Al-Malikata visited the training and gave an address to the players.

“Snapshots from President Dr Abdul Majeed Al-Malikata’s visit for the first team football exercises that took place this evening and the list is a motivational speech for the players in a positive atmosphere,” the club reported.

It stated that Majeed Al-Malikata assured the players and encouraged them to remain at the club and give their best. He thanked them for the support during this period.

The return to training means Kampamba will not be able to travel back to Zambia. Last week, the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts began the process to safely evacuate the skilful midfielder after he issued a distress call over his safety.

Kampamba’s contract with Al Madina will expire at the end of the season.
