Thomas Nyirenda, head coach of Young Konkola Blades Football Club, says the club’s decision to hold open trials will help identify talented players that may not have the opportunity to exhibit their abilities.

Nyirenda guided the club to the FAZ Copperbelt Provincial Division One League.

He is optimistic the trials starting on (Monday) will provide an important pathway for aspiring players from within the community.

Speaking in an interview with Bola News, the former midfielder said many gifted youngsters are often overlooked due to limited access to established football structures.

“It is important to have open trials because there are a lot of talented young players in the community who don’t have access to join clubs. When we announce open trials, we are giving those players an opportunity. Everyone is welcome because our main task is to teach them the basics,” Nyirenda said.

The club is specifically targeting players below the age of 20 as part of its long-term player development strategy.

“We are looking for players below 20 because we want to produce long-term players for the senior team. We don’t want a situation where a player graduates from the youth team and only plays for two or three seasons before becoming too old. That’s why we are focusing on younger players,” he explained.

Nyirenda explained that the coaching staff will not demand perfection during the trials.

He emphasized that the club is looking for players with fundamental football skills and a willingness to learn.

“There is nothing much we will be looking for. As long as a player has the basic idea of controlling the ball and making a pass, he is welcome. The rest is our job as coaches,” he said.
