Rainford Kalaba, 2012 AfCON winner, has called for unity and thorough preparation for the Chipolopolo Boys ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Zambia is a group I alongside Algeria, Burundi, and Togo, with the Desert Foxes entering the qualifiers fresh from reaching the Round of 32 at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup before bowing out following a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.

Speaking on ZNBC Radio 4’s Sports Day Show, Kalaba said Zambia’s success against group favorites Algeria will largely depend on togetherness and proper planning.

“I know the Zambian team. We need to prepare adequately because it won’t be easy. Algeria have experience of playing in the World Cup, so they have more experience than us. We need to prepare well to play against them.”

The former Chipolopolo and TP Mazembe midfielder also reflected on the lessons Zambia can draw from the high standards displayed at the ongoing FIFA World Cup if the Chipolopolo are to realize their ambition of qualifying for the global showpiece.

Kalaba challenged players to raise their performance levels whenever they represent the national team, insisting international football demands greater commitment than club football.

“Put in 120 percent” – Kalaba.

“The players representing the country need to know that it is a big tournament for them. When you are playing for the national team, it’s not the same attitude you have at your club because the national team is on another level,” he said.

“If you perform at 100 per cent, you need to put in 120 per cent. Football is changing every day in terms of technique and tactics. We need to adapt to the different tactical approaches being used by European teams.”

Zambia will be hoping to secure one of the qualification spots for the 2027 AFCON when the qualifiers get underway in September.
