For many, Wesley Chibambo, also known as Dandy Krazy, will be remembered for his numerous hit songs, but Zambian football fans will remember him for the impact his song had on the Chipolopolo Boys’ 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in Gabon.
Dandy Krazy was admitted to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) after suffering multiple injuries in a road traffic accident that killed three others on December 31st, 2024. He had an emergency operation on January 1st, 2025, but died shortly after.
He was one of the few popular Zambian artists who traveled to Gabon to watch the Chipolopolo win the 2012 AFCON, and his song helped the team win.
The Chipolopolo Boys used his ‘DONCHI KUBEBA’ (Don’t Tell Them) song throughout the tournament as a strategy to catch their opponents off guard.
The song was political, and it simply said, ‘Don’t tell your opponents what you’re up to until you defeat them.’ It worked for the Chipolopolo, who went on to defeat Africa’s giants, who considered themselves underdogs.
Every time the team scored, Captain Christopher Katongo would give the don’t kubeba sign by placing his finger on his lips. It meant they shouldn’t say much and instead do their thing on the pitch.
During that tournament, Zambia defeated the likes of Senegal, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast in the final to lift the AFCON trophy.
