Former Zambia national team defender Buchizya Mfune believes the Chipolopolo boast one of the most talented and experienced squads heading into the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off this weekend.

Mfune said the inclusion of players who have featured at high-profile tournaments like the AFCON is crucial.

“Some of the players in this team have played at AFCON and that kind of experience is invaluable,” said Mfune in an interview. “Their presence will guide the younger ones, especially during difficult moments in the tournament.”

Mfune was part of the Zambian squad that reached the quarter-finals at the 2016 CHAN under coach George Lwandamina, without conceding a goal. He recalls the impact the tournament had on his own career.

“Playing at CHAN in 2016 was a life-changing experience for me,” he said. “It was a platform to grow and learn, not just from my teammates but also from opponents who had played at the highest level across the continent.”

Now serving as a member of the Green Buffaloes technical bench, Mfune has challenged the current team to aim high.

“This is a golden opportunity, and they should give it everything. Zambia has what it takes to go all the way and win the title,” he added. “They just need to remain focused, disciplined, and fight for the badge.”

Zambia is placed in a tough Group A alongside hosts Kenya, Morocco, DR Congo, and Angola. The 2024 CHAN tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from August 2 to 30.
