Malawi and Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga has agreed to a new deal that will keep her at the club until 2029.

Chawinga says extending her contract means a lot to her because she calls Kansas City home.

“I am happy for this. The way the club and the city supports me and my teammates is truly special. I’m looking forward to staying longer in Kansas City and working hard with my teammates,” she said.

Chawinga believes her efforts on the pitch are what led officials to extend her contract.

Since her arrival at the club in 2024, she has rewritten the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) record books, becoming the first player in league history to be named MVP in consecutive years (2024 and 2025).

She is also the second player in NWSL history to win the Golden Boot twice, achieving the feat in 2024 and 2025. She scored 20 goals in 2024 and 15 the following year, becoming only the second player in the league to record consecutive seasons with 15 or more goals.

Currently, she sits second on the 2026 Golden Boot leaderboard with seven goals and two assists.

Club owners have praised Chawinga for what she has achieved since joining the club.

“Temwa is truly special, and no one changes the game more than she does,” said Kansas City Current co-owners Angie and Chris Long, adding that “She displays an unwavering commitment to scoring goals under pressure and when it matters most.

“Combined with her defensive presence, she is, without question, one of the best players in the world. She is someone people want to play with and she makes our team better. We are so excited to extend her contract and keep her in Kansas City.”
