Zambian youngster Bonephanseo Phiri, who plies his trade with Locomotive Tbilisi in Georgia, has expressed pride and determination after being named in the Zambia U-20 squad for the Egypt 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Phiri, 19, is one of 13 foreign-based players selected to join the locally-based squad, which has already begun its preparations for the prestigious continental tournament.
“I’m honoured to be part of the Zambia U-20 team as we aim for success in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations,” he told BolaNews in an exclusive interview.
Far from simply celebrating the call-up, Phiri has set his sights on making a real impact.
“I envision myself as a key contributor, bringing my expertise and passion to drive the team forward. I’m committed to being a team player, learning, and growing with my teammates to achieve our goals and make Zambian football proud.”
Phiri reflects on his journey so far
The centre forward’s path to national recognition has been one of sacrifice and persistence. Moving abroad at a young age to chase his football dream meant adapting to new environments, cultures, and playing styles.
“My path to the national team call-up has been shaped by personal sacrifices,” Phiri shared. “Adapting to new environments, overcoming setbacks, and pursuing opportunities abroad.”
Those challenges, he says, have built his resilience both on and off the pitch.
“I’m grateful for the support of loved ones,” he added. “And excited to represent my country.”
Phiri believes that the European football environment has helped sharpen his game—especially in terms of tactical awareness, discipline, and mental preparation.

“Playing in Europe with Locomotive Tbilisi has given me valuable experiences to bring to the Zambia U20 setup. I’ve learned lessons in tactical awareness, physical conditioning, and mental preparation.”
“European football emphasizes strategy, teamwork, and discipline, which can enhance our performance. I’m also looking to apply advanced training methods and adaptability to help the team succeed.”
With maturity beyond his years, Phiri is determined not just to fit into the team—but to help elevate it. He also had a message for young Zambian footballers dreaming of breaking into Europe: “To young Zambian footballers with ambitions to play in Europe, I offer these words of encouragement: stay committed, be patient, and seize every opportunity. Hard work, resilience, and adaptability are key to success. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and never let setbacks hold you back.”
Phiri is expected to join the national U-20 camp later this month as Zambia continues preparations for the 2025 AFCON.
