Zimbabwe Castle Premier Soccer League side Caps United has made a major move, appointing former Malawi national team captain Joseph Kamwendo as head of junior teams on a three-year deal.
Kamwendo first made a significant impact in Zimbabwe during his playing stints with Caps United in 2004 and 2006. The attacking midfielder became the first foreigner to win the Soccer Star of the Year award in the 2005/06 season, among several accolades he earned while playing for the club.
The club announced on Tuesday afternoon that Kamwendo, from Malawi, will oversee all Caps junior teams and will also join the senior team’s bench to assist coach Ian Bakala.
In response, Kamwendo expressed his gratitude and readiness to take on the role.
“Honestly I am grateful to the leadership and management of Caps United for trusting my services. I also thank God for this opportunity. This is a huge responsibility for me and I am ready for the job. It feels good to return to Zimbabwe after a long time,” he said.
“I thought it wise to come and join Caps once more. I thank the club president and madam; it’s a good feeling to be here. Everyone knows that I went to Europe through Caps, there is history that is there. I believe the experience I have I will use the same to build the team. People should expect good things. If we can work together, I see the future to be bright,” he added.
Nicknamed Shakira, Kamwendo began his professional career in 2004 with Caps United before moving to Danish club FC Nordsjaelland in 2006, where he scored four goals in 16 games. In 2011, he joined South African side Orlando Pirates before being loaned to Vasco da Gama. In 2013, he moved to the Mozambican side of LD Maputo, and in 2016, he joined TP Mazembe.
