Morocco has become the first African side to book a spot in the knockout stages of the men’s 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The North Africans defeated Brazil 2-1 on Wednesday to confirm their qualification, securing a place in the last 16 with a game to spare.
The Atlas Cubs, making their first appearance in the competition in 20 years, now sit top of Group C following their opening 2-0 win against Spain. They will face Mexico in their final group match, though their progression is already guaranteed.
Elsewhere, Nigeria lost their opening Group F match 1-0 to Norway. The Flying Eagles, seven-time African champions, will be aiming to bounce back when they face Saudi Arabia in their second fixture. Still in search of their first win at the ongoing tournament, Nigeria must claim victory to revive hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
In Group E, South Africa suffered a 2-1 defeat to France in their opener. Amajita will look to respond strongly when they meet New Caledonia on Friday. Currently third in the group, South Africa needs a win to keep alive their chances of progressing and will be eager to replicate the form that saw them shine at the U-20 AFCON.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s chances of advancing have been dealt a major blow after back-to-back defeats. The Young Pharaohs lost 2-0 to Japan in their first Group A match before falling 2-1 to New Zealand. Bottom of the group, Egypt must beat Chile in their final fixture to stand any chance of making it to the knockout stages.
