Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele has issued a stern directive to newly appointed Green Buffaloes head coach Aggrey Chiyangi, urging him to prioritise results and deliver success on the pitch.

Speaking during Chiyangi’s unveiling ceremony at Arakan Barracks, where the experienced coach signed a two-year deal, Zyeele said the Army expected a return on its investment in football.

“The only option that you have is winning, so take it seriously. Take it extremely seriously,” Zyeele said. “We don’t have too much money to throw around, but the little that we have must be used to achieve great results.”

Zyeele described Green Buffaloes as a critical component of the Army’s institutional identity, stating that the club must uphold high standards of performance, discipline, and accountability.

“Our soccer team is one of the biggest consumers of our weekly budget. And that’s not just from official allocations some of this money comes directly from us, the soldiers. Director General, Chairman, Coach, you will all be held accountable for how it is spent,” he said.

Soldiers should be considered – Army Chief

Zyeele also raised concerns over previous player selection patterns, which he said had favoured civilians over enlisted soldiers.

“When I looked at the line-ups last season, I saw civilians on the pitch while our servicemen were warming the bench,” the Army Commander said. “I haven’t asked the general why that was so, but I want you to believe that we have servicemen who can play just as well, if not better. There must be a fair and suitable balance.”

He warned that indiscipline, especially acts of aggression toward match officials, would not be tolerated.

Meanwhile, back for a second stint at the club, Chiyangi pledged to instil a winning mentality and maintain the values associated with Army football.

“It’s a great honour to be back at Green Buffaloes. This club is among the biggest in Zambia, and working with the Army again means a lot to me,” he said. “The Commander’s message was powerful. Some of the things he said are crucial, not just to me but to the whole technical bench. I’ve worked with the Zambia Army before and also with another service team, Green Eagles. I understand what soldiers expect.”

Chiyangi will be assisted by a seasoned backroom staff including: Dias Kakunta (First Assistant Coach), Rotson Kilambe (Second Assistant), Jimmy Mumba (Third Assistant), Felix Katongo (Physical Trainer), Davy Kaumba (Goalkeeper Coach).
