Former Nkana chief executive officer Kelvin Mutafu says the Kitwe derby has the potential to grow into a fixture comparable to South Africa’s Soweto Derby in the near future.
On Sunday, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) staged a sold-out Soweto Derby, where Orlando Pirates and arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs played out a 1–1 draw.
Mutafu has told Bolanews in an interview that there have been positive indications in the past that show that the Kitwe Derby can reach those levels.
“I think our derby is unique, and it has been growing over the seasons,” Mutafu said. “With everyone’s effort, we can ensure that one day our derby reaches the levels of the Soweto Derby.”

He said there is a need for companies and businesses outside the usual sponsors of the two teams to come on board and ensure that they maximise the visibility that the derby can bring.
“You see, I was watching the Soweto Derby on Sunday, and surely you can see that if we do the right things, even ours can reach those levels; it is only a matter of time, I think,” he said.
