Kazuyoshi Miura of Japan, the world’s oldest footballer, is set to play until his late 50s after signing a contract extension with Portuguese club Oliveirense.

Miura is on loan from Yokohama F.C. at the moment. He left the Japanese club in January and has made three appearances for Oliveirense so far.

The Portuguese side, who are also the owners of Yokohama, announced that he has extended his stay at the club.

“Miura kazu continues at UD Oliveirense,” the club tweeted.

The new contract’s duration, however, was not defined. Some publications believe he could play for the next two years.

Miura, who is 56 years old, has previously stated that he intends to play until he reaches 60.

He began his professional football career in 1986 and played for different clubs such as F.C. Santos, Dinamo Zagreb, Kyoto Purple Sanga, and Vissel Kobe.

In his international career, which ended 23 years ago, the Japanese Football icon scored 55 goals in 89 appearances.

If he plays until the age of 60, he will set a new Guinness World Record for the oldest footballer ever to play professional football which he already holds.
