Janine Van Wyk, who has made 183 international appearances, is set to go down in history as the most-capped African footballer, male or female.

The 36-year-old initially missed the chance to break the record during last month’s Olympic qualifiers after being unused.

She took to social media to express her displeasure and left camp upset.

However, after being recalled to the squad, Van Wyk has another chance at breaking Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan’s 184-cap record if she features in both matches against Burkina Faso.

Banyana’s head coach, Desiree Ellis, promised the player that she would grant her the two caps.

“We will do our utmost best to get her those two caps,” said Ellis.

“It’s not just a record for her. But I think it’s a record for women’s football in the country. It’s a record for SAFA. And a record for women’s football on the continent.

“And yes, she was in the previous camp and I was asked by the media if ‘is there another opportunity?’ and I said ‘Burkina Faso’, and here is the opportunity.”

Van Wyk might finally get her wish before hanging up her boots.

She made her debut for Banyana against Nigeria in 2005 and has competed in two Olympic Games, captained the team at their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019.

Van Wyk was also a member of the squad that won the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Banyana Banyana take on Burkina Faso today with a kick-off set for 18:00 hrs CAT.
