Malawi Women’s Football team captain Tabitha Chawinga has assured the nation that her younger sister Temwa Chawinga will win the Ballon d’Or in a year to come.
Tabitha said this on Thursday evening, when addressing Malawi’s first lady Gertrude Mutharika on arrival from Morocco, where the team finished as runners-up in this year’s Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Tabitha told Mutharika that Malawi should thank God for giving us Temwa, who, according to her, is a hard worker and wishes her country well.
“I am not saying this because she is my sister,” Tabitha stated. “I am speechless with Temwa. She is a full player. She is a blessing to this country; she is my superstar, my best player. I believe in her,” said the Olympique Lyonnais forward.
She added: “One day or next year, we will be speaking while the Ballon d’Or is there; she is a hard worker. People talk a lot about her even on social media, but she will not pull back,” she said.
Tabitha also commented on what happened last year when she decided to go shopping in China instead of playing friendly matches for the national team, saying her sister is always willing to play for Malawi.

She said, “A lot of people called me and said that I should speak to her. I assured them that Temwa is okay and will represent her country.”
Temwa, who plays for Kansas City Current, claimed the Golden Boot at the just-concluded Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco, scoring five and assisting two.
Last year, she finished 17th in the 2025 Women’s Ballon d’Or rankings, announced in France.
