EXCLUSIVE: Temwa not moved by records in NWSL

Despite currently leading the 2024 scorers chart and setting a NWSL record, Temwa does not want that to grow her bigheadedness.

United States-based Malawian footballer Temwa Chawinga has set a new National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) record by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive matches.

On Sunday night, Temwa scored a consolation goal as Kansas City fell 2-1 to the North Carolina Courage.

Sunday’s goal moves her to the top of the scorers list with 14 goals, two more than Orlando Pride striker Barbra Banda.

Speaking to BolaNews, Temwa said she is happy with her achievement but she doesn’t want to get ahead of herself.

“I am amazed; however, I am not moved by what I have achieved; I will keep putting much effort to help my team. Look, I scored over the weekend but the team lost, so I need to keep working hard so that I can help my team win,” she said.

Temwa who ended 2023 as the leading female goalscorer of the calendar year according to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) says her focus is on helping her team win and not competing with individual players such as Banda.

“I am just playing my game without looking at what Barbra [Banda] or other players are doing. Like I said already that Barbra is my friend, and we are all enjoying our game.

“I am just playing my game and will accept everything that God will give me. Remember, it is my first season, so I should see how the game will progress,” she said.
