Ascent to represent Malawi in CAF Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament

The Malawian academy, which produced 2023 COSAFA Women's Most Promising Player Leticia Chinyamula, will represent the country in the 2024 COSAFA Women's Champions League in South Africa from October to September.

Ascent is a women’s club based in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, and will represent the country in the upcoming COSAFA Women’s Champions League, which also serves as a qualifying tournament for the CAF Champions League. The club won the just-ended 2023 Goshen-FAM Women’s Championship, defeating MDF Lioness 1-0.

Ascent defeated Mtopwa 4-0, a team that represented Malawi in the regional tournament last year. They also defeated the Silver Strikers women 2-0 in the semifinals, setting up a final match with the MDF Lioness.

Thom Nkolongo, the club’s coach, believes his team will compete at Cosafa rather than just participate.

“We had a good game, we planned to score more goals but that was not the case. Thanks to my girls, we managed to defend well. We will go back to prepare well and have a team that can represent Malawi at Cosafa,” he said.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya congratulated Ascent and said FAM will support their preparation so they represent Malawi well at Cosafa games.

“I am happy for Ascent; look, they produced Most Promising Player at the just-ended Cosafa Awards; this is a message that this team is doing everything right.

“We will support them as they prepare for Cosafa games in South Africa,” said Haiya.

Last year, Malawi was represented by Mtopwa, who lost all games in the tournament.
