Zambia lose again at U-17 World Cup, Kanyemba reacts

Zambia Under-17 Women’s National Team head coach Carol Kanyemba has quickly shifted attention to the final Group D match against France after the team’s narrow 3-2 defeat to Venezuela at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Copper Princesses were left disappointed after conceding a late winner against Venezuela, their second defeat in the group following a 5-0 loss to Japan.

In the other Group D encounter, Japan defeated France 2-0 to secure qualification for the knockout stages.

Speaking after the defeat to Venezuela, Kanyemba said the scoreline did not reflect Zambia’s overall performance, praising her players for their attitude, character and ability to execute the team’s plans.

“First of all, I want to say thank you to God and return the glory to Him. The final scoreline is not really a reflection of the performance that we had today,” Kanyemba said.

“The girls today had the right attitude. We did almost everything right, but instead of concentrating in the dying minutes, I think we panicked a bit, which led to the goal that we conceded.”

Kanyemba impressed by performance despite defeat

Kanyemba said the team had made progress in its defensive organisation and attacking transitions.

“We tried to be as compact as possible at the back, and we also transitioned well in attack. I believe the same attitude that they showed in today’s game is what we shall encourage them to continue with, because today they showed a lot of character,” she said.

Despite the setback, the coach insisted that Zambia would approach the France encounter with belief, as the team still has an opportunity to demonstrate its potential on the world stage.

“Not all hope is gone. We still have what it takes. Football is won on the pitch. We respect France, but we are also here to show our abilities, and I believe the girls are looking forward to continuing to show their strength and abilities,” Kanyemba said.

“Everything is possible in football. We shall play our game and implement whatever changes are necessary.”

The Copper Princesses will face France on Saturday at 20:00 CAT.
