Charles Kalumba’s penalty save inspired Red Arrows to a historic CAF Confederation Cup group-stage qualification after the Zambian side beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 on post-match penalties, following a 1-1 aggregate draw.
Heading into the second leg with a 1-0 advantage, Red Arrows needed only a draw to advance but suffered a 1-0 defeat in Durban.
As expected, Kaizer Chiefs came into the match on the front foot, making their intentions clear from the onset. Amakhosi enjoyed possession and launched several attacks but failed to find the back of the net in the first half.
The hosts continued from where they left off after the break, while Red Arrows also created a few chances of their own.
Chiefs eventually broke the deadlock in the 66th minute but needed another goal to take the aggregate lead. The Airmen defended resolutely until the final whistle, sending the tie straight to a penalty shootout.
Chisi Mbewe’s side held their nerve to beat Amakhosi 3-2 on penalties.
Chiefs missed three spot-kicks, with Lebohang Maboe and Ethan Chislett hitting the crossbar, while Reeve Frosler was denied by Kalumba.
Red Arrows also had John Pweto’s effort saved by Bruce Bvuma, but Peter Kalota, Alassane Diarra and Ricky Banda converted their penalties to help the Zambian side prevail in a dramatic shootout.
Red Arrows will now compete in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage for the first time in their history, becoming the fourth Zambian club to achieve the feat, alongside Zesco United (2017, 2018–19 and 2025–26), Zanaco (2010, 2019–20 and 2021–22), Nkana (2018–19 and 2020–21) and NAPSA Stars (2020–21).
