EXCLUSIVE: Ghampani Lungu reacts to first career hattrick vs. Mamelodi Sundowns, talks national team

Lungu has been productive recently, chalking up four goals and an assist in his last three matches. However, the 27 year old, who has 16 caps for Zambia, has not featured for the Chipolopolo Boys since the Four Nations Tournament hosted by Malawi in March 2024.

Chipolopolo attacker Ghampani Lungu has described the feeling of scoring the first hattrick of his career against Mamelodi Sundowns in an exclusive interview with BolaNews. He also spoke about his chances of returning to the Zambian national team.

Mamelodi Sundowns played out an eleven-goal thriller with Siwelele FC in the South African Premiership (PSL), beating them 7-4 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday. The Brazilians claimed an early two goal lead courtesy of a stunning Teboho Mokena volley and Tashreeq Matthews header at seven and nine minutes, respectively.

Sydney Mobbie found his own net to make it 3-0 for Mamelodi Sundowns in the 24th minute before Ghampani Lungu got onto the end of a pass from Sphesihle Jeza to get his first of the night at the half hour mark.

Two close range finishes from Matthews and Brayan Muñiz extended Mamelodi Sundowns’ lead to 5-1 before the interval.

Lungu got his second after being set through on goal by Jeza in the 50th minute, beating Ronwen Williams with composure. Another own goal and Muñiz strike completed the South African champions’ goalscoring fiesta.

“I really feel good” – Lungu.

Siwelele’s Relebogile Mokhuoane netted the 10th goal of the contest before Lungu secured the first hat-trick of his career with a ferocious penalty at 81 minutes. The two sides played out the highest scoring match in South African Premiership history since 1996-97.

Commenting about scoring his first career hat-trick against 2025-26 CAF Champions League finalists and PSL record winners Mamelodi Sundowns, Lungu told BolaNews, “It feels bittersweet because we lost by a heavy score. But I feel really good. Not a lot of people can say they have scored a hat-trick vs Sundowns. And by the grace of God, I can.“

Known for his creativity, flair and industry upfront, Lungu has been productive recently, chalking up four goals and an assist in his last three matches. However, the 27 year old, who has 16 caps for Zambia, has not featured for the Chipolopolo Boys since the Four Nations Tournament hosted by Malawi in March 2024.

“That would be great and all. But in all honesty, God’s plan and timing is the best 🙏🏾,” Lungu responded when asked about a possible return to the Zambian national team setup.

Lungu, formerly of Power Dynamos, has become a mainstay in the South African topflight, having represented Supersport United for seven years before a recent switch to Siwelele FC at the beginning of the season.

About his targets for next season, Lungu said, “Just to contribute more to the team success from the beginning of the season and obviously score more goals and assists.”

Siwelele FC have already secured their topflight status for next season and will look to extend Lungu’s stay at the club.
