The Flames of Malawi participation has been disappointing, despite assistant coach Peter Mponda’s intent that the team would travel to South Africa to win the 2025 COSAFA Cup for the first time ever.
A goalless draw with Namibia and a 1-0 loss to Lesotho, Malawi are at the bottom of Group B.
Malawi’s only hope is to defeat Angola by roughly five goals while hoping that Lesotho draws with Namibia.
Both against Namibia and Lesotho, Malawi dominated possession but was unable to convert the opportunities they produced.
“Even the boys are upset that we lost the match against Namibia, and I am displeased with the outcome” Mponda said.
“We have little chance of qualifying, but we have to win our final game and we’ll see what happens to other teams, but I must say that I am really impressed with my boys’ performance, and we need to win our final game with this performance,” he said.
Reaching the final in 2002 and 2003 and qualifying for the semi-finals in 2023 have been Malawi’s best outings at the COSAFA throughout the previous 23 years.
