Zimbabwe Women’s Football team coach Stella Gotal is confident that tables will turn in Harare when her charges host the Malawi Scorchers in the second leg of the CAF Olympic Qualification on Tuesday.
On Friday, the Mighty Warriors of Zimbabwe lost 2-0 to Malawi with goals from Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga in a match in which Malawi missed a lot of scoring opportunities.
Coach Gotal said she is proud of her charges and thinks in Zimbabwe they will have a different story.
“So, 2-0 is still a good result for us, even though we lost. But there is something positive, because at the end of the match, maybe the last 15 to 20 minutes, we had good opportunities that we didn’t maybe use this time. But it’s definitely a motivation for the second match, which we will play at home, and gives us somehow a positive spirit,” she said.
For the first time, a lot of supporters packed the Bingu National Stadium to support the Malawi girls, which coach Gotal said played a part in their defeat.
“I think that the main difference maybe was the support that Malawi had at the beginning from their fans, because this definitely brings extra energy to the team,” she said.
“Malawi, technically really good” – Gotal.
She also said the Chawinga sisters made things difficult for the Zimbabwe side; hence, they approached the match with a lot of players at the back.
“We knew that Malawi has really strong personalities up front, like the Chawinga sisters, definitely. And somehow we assumed that they might play with two strikers up in front and two wingers.

“So, from a tactical perspective, we positioned ourselves more defensively because we didn’t want to let those players one-on-one with our players, because we know that one of their qualities is speed, which is number one. And second of all, they’re technically really good,” she added.
Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili said he is aware that his charges had problems at the back and promised that they will fix those gaps before the second leg on Tuesday next week.
