Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Collins Mbesuma has advised Zesco United to adopt a cautious defensive approach as they prepare to face South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Zambia’s representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, Zesco United, will host Kaizer Chiefs in their 2025–26 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage Matchday 3 encounter at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Sunday, 25 January 2026.
The nine-time Zambian Super League champions have endured a difficult start to their continental campaign, having lost their opening two group matches against Egyptian opposition, 1-0 to Zamalek and 2-3 to Al Masry.
Zesco United will be hoping to turn their fortunes around on home soil when they face the South African outfit.
Mbesuma, who played for Kaizer Chiefs between 2004 and 2005 after joining from Roan United, shared his insights ahead of the clash.
“My advice to Zesco United is that they should know that Kaizer Chiefs are not a team who love to play even when they win the ball. They always like to capitalize on the mistakes of the opposition,” he said.
Mbesuma enjoyed a stellar spell with the Soweto giants and was named PSL Player of the Season in 2005 after scoring a remarkable 35 goals in a single campaign.
“When they win the ball, they attack a lot because they have speedy strikers and wingers. So as soon as they win the ball, they go forward,” he added.
“So Zesco United should have a compact defense and play with a lot of caution. Zesco can win the game; they just have to be careful on counterattacks.”
The former Portsmouth striker also challenged Kaizer Chiefs to fight for victory.
“I wish them all the best. I know Kaizer Chiefs is also my team, so let the best team win, but I will be happier if Zesco United carries the day,” concluded Mbesuma.
