After winning the first leg 2-1 in Cairo last weekend, the Al Ahly held Wydad to a 1-1 draw, giving them a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Wydad were looking to compete in what has been described as a dream season for Moroccan football after the Atlas Lions reached the semi-final of the World Cup. But Al Ahly were on hand to ensure that they maintained their King of Africa status.

Egyptian defender Mohamed Abdelmonem headed in a crucial late equalizer for Al Ahly, ensuring the Red Devils’ eleventh African title.

The home team scored in the 27th minute through Yahya Attiat Allah which could have given them the title. But it was the Egyptian team who got the all-important goal and took home the trophy.

The defending champions threw everything forward in search of a winning goal but to no avail. Al Ahly remained resolute in defense and held for a draw to secure their 11th title.

The victory saw the Egyptian side avenge last season’s 2-0 defeat to Wydad in the final at the same venue.

Al Ahly have since secured a place at the FIFA Club World Cup. They will be making their ninth appearance at the global competition.

They joined the likes of Al Ittihad, Auckland City, Leon, Manchester City, and Urawa Red Diamonds, with the winner of the Copa Libertadores completing the list.

Many will hope the African giants can finally win the World Cup and end the winning streak of the likes of newly crowned European champions Manchester City.
