Bayer Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title by going undefeated through the first 29 rounds of the season. They won the trophy with a 5-0 over Werder Bremen on Sunday.
The club has won the Bundesliga after a 120-year wait. It is also the first time a team other than Bayern Munich has won the league in the previous 11 years.
On October 5, 2022, Xabi Alonso took over at Bayer, with the team second-bottom in the Bundesliga, and going into the weekend, he only needed a win over Werder Bremen to secure their first top-tier title in Germany.
To date, Alonso’s side has not lost a single match in the 2023-24 Bundesliga season or any other competition.
“It feels great. I have the feeling this is not just for us, this is for so many people that have been chasing this dream for so many years,” Alonso said after the game. “Past coaches are part of it as well. It is very special when it is the first time for everything, and this is the most difficult title probably.”
With 25 wins, four draws, zero losses, and a goal ratio of 74:19 and 79 points, Bayer has had an incredible league season, regardless of what happens in the remaining games, and is truly deserving of the title.
Meanwhile, with five games remaining, they can still match or surpass Bayern Munich’s records for most points scored in a single Bundesliga season (91 in 2012/13), most wins in a season (29 in 12/13), and fewest losses (one in both 12/13 and 1986/87).
No team has ever completed a Bundesliga season unbeaten. Bayer are also in contention for the German Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
