Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman and Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda were named men’s and women’s Player of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday night.

Lookman was awarded CAF Men’s Player of the Year after a successful year with Atalanta and Nigeria’s Super Eagles where he won the Europa Cup and reached the AFCON final respectively.

He took over from compatriot Victor Osimhen, who won it in 2023. It is the first time Nigeria has had back-to-back winners in the Men’s award since Nwankwo Kanu (1996) and Victor Ikpeba (1997) were honored almost thirty years ago.

On the other hand, Banda led Orlando Pride to the 2024 NWSL Shield and Championship, scoring the game-winning goal against Washington Spirit.

Her hat trick for Zambia at the Paris Olympics 2024 was her third in Olympic Games football, setting an all-time competition record and elevating her to the ranks of the sport’s greats.

Banda became the first player from Africa to be included in the FIFPRO Women’s World 11 in 2024.
