Football will return on Sunday following a suspension due to the death of eight people and Vice President of Malawi, Saulos Chilima, in an aircraft crash on June 10.
The sports council of Malawi issued an order to halt all sporting competitions so that people could grieve for the deceased.
The Malawi league has been on hold for two weeks forcing Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to cancel its COSAFA participation this year, a move which disappointed some fans.
Some football fans called on FAM to rescind the decision saying players should fight to honor the departed souls just like what Zambia did in 1993 when 25 players and officials perished in a plane crash, but the FA organized another team which did so well.
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) said that there won’t be a mid-season break this year in response to the suspension.
Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda said they are planning to make sure that the 2024 season ends on November 10.
“We have released fixtures for teams to have a look at them. We plan to end the 2024 season on November 10 but with other tournaments this might be revisited,” he said.
This week’s fixtures will see defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets traveling to the capital city Lilongwe where they will face rookies Creck Sporting Club at Civo Stadium.
