Malawian FA president reveals he will not take his USD25,000 yearly honorarium

Newly elected Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya says he will not be taking his USD25,000 (about K43 million Malawian Kwacha) yearly honorarium which is allocated to a FAM president by CAF.

Fleetwood Haiya says that instead of enjoying the allocation, which goes to all FA presidents, the Malawi money will go towards development.

Haiya, who defeated Walter Nyamilandu in the FA elections earlier this month, says he has made the decision to ensure that every coin goes directly to game development.

“We need a lot of money to run the affairs of FAM; this is why I have issued this directive,” he said.

Haiya said the money will go to youth development or women’s football upon assessing the need.

The former Super League of Malawi president, who has been in office for ten days, was addressing the media on his trip to Saudi Arabia on December 21, where he attended the FIFA summit.

Haiya said following his meeting with FIFA President Giani Infantino, FIFA has given FAM USD169 000 to clear player arrears for the Flames and Scorchers, with the cash set to be in the FAM account soon.

He also said FIFA will release USD 250,000 to FAM for national team engagements, with another USD 20,000 allocated to FAM for equipment.

“FIFA forwards three programs that run for four years starting in 2023, which will see FAM receive USD 8 million. USD5 million will go towards operations, with USD3 million going towards projects,” he said.

“My agenda is to make sure that we put the player first. The player should be our priority in our operations.”

Haiya also promised that in 90 days, the FAM strategic plan formulation will be set and he will make sure that it is aligned with his manifesto.
